HHOH-COLUMBIANA-01:  ABSTRACTS FROM BIOGRAPHIES IN JOHN STRUTHERS STEWART'S HISTORY OF NORTHEASTERN OHIO.  Seven pages 8” by 11”, 1983, cardstock covers, stapled. by Carol Bell, $5.00.  This book includes the counties of Ashtabula, Columbiana, Geauga, Lake, Mahoning, Portage, Stark and Trumbull, Ohio.    There are three volumes in this set and over 470 biographies have been abstracted here.  Countries mentioned as birthplaces for a subject or his father total 28.  Volume I is historical and is not included in this abstract.  Included in this project are both Volume II which covers page numbers 499 to 816, while Volume III covers page numbers 817-1,118.  When this abstract was first done there was no every-name index to this history.

The format for the abstract of each biography includes the page number on which it is located in the original book, an abbreviation of the county in which the person lived, his/her complete name, the year born, the subject’s birthplace, the wife’s surname, first name and middle name or initial, if given, asterisk if the subject person had children, the subject’s father’s first name and birthplace and the subject’s mother’ maiden name and first name.  All of this information appears on one line; such as this one:  Sample of one sketch:  1,084, CB, BLOOMGREN, GEORGE S.  1903, PA, CASE, Dorothy, *, Ernest G., SW, Nelson, Selma. Which tells you this:

YOGSOH COLUMBIANA-02:  THE COLUMBIANA  COUNTY CONNECTION.   WITH THE PARTIAL 1860 MORTALITY SCHEDULE FOR COLUMBIA COUNTY, OHIO. This mortality schedule, taken from the microfilm copy, was transcribed by Jean F. Butler. This schedule was taken at the same time the 1860 census was taken and included deaths from the first of June, 1859 to the first of June, 1860.  Information is sorted out by townships.  Information is as follows: Surname, First name, age, sex, color, birthplace, month, occupation, cause of death, length of sickness.  Collins, Thomas, 14, m(ale, [Blank indicates white], June, farm hand, Cause unknown, sudden.

This booklet holds Franklin, Hanover, Perry, West and Knox Townships.  Then there are several pages of the Newsletter of the Columbiana Chapter of the Ohio Genealogical Society.  News of books available, meeting notices, queries and more queries in every issue and there are close to two years issues here, membership lists with addresses, news of the archives at Kent State, lists of genealogies in the Salem Library and the Lepper Library, A copy of the tax list for 1860, tips on how to begin research into Pennsylvania, “for sale” notices for books, Bible records of the Schell Family 1821-1934, an interesting idea-each member prepares a list of their ancestral surnames which are printed here, many of the queries are searching for more information on a Columbiana surname(they often give everything they know about him to help people know what they still need to know.  It also printed a list of the Federation of Family History Societies in England and Ireland.  They also ran a copy of the Ohio County Map showing the districts for each of the Ohio Network of American History Research Centers.  A list of Genealogical Research Materials at the Ohio Historical Society was published here, along with a list of materials NOT held by them.  Helpful addresses of other research centers are throughout these papers.
