The pioneer biographies contained in this publication were compiled from the
Danville Evening Commercial. Each entry lists an early Vermilion County
marriage followed by a biography and family history of the couple. The 'tidbits' bring
the reader back to another era, a place in time when things were simple.
This well-researched publication has it all ... everything from courting rituals to
family migration patterns, personality assessments, dates of deaths/births, marriages,
and careers. A 'don't-miss' for any Vermilion researcher.
If the surname you are researching is listed below, you might have struck the quaint and
proverbial genealogical ‘pot-of-gold.”
Samuel J. RUSSELL, who was married to Miss Lucy GILBERT, March 13, 1833, by
Rev. Enoch KINGSBURY, at the home of the bride's parents,
Mr. & Mrs. Solomon GILBERT, in Danville, was a well-know citizen in his
day and prominently identified with the business interests and general
growth and prosperity of Danville & Vermilion County. He was twice a volunteer in
the Blackhawk War, the first time in a home volunteer company and the second in the regular
militia of the state. He did not have a very exalted opinion of the war, even going to far
as to say that it was a farce, that in a company of fifty volunteers which he
was with, only a few had guns, and they were very poor specimens of flint locks.
The woman who became his wife lived with her parents on south Vermilion street, where
Mr. RUSSELL paid her assiduous court. In those days tallow dips were the fashion. One night,
while being 'shown out" by his sweetheart, one of the strange things of those days
happened. Miss GILBERT had a tallow dip in one hand, and as they reacher the
front door, on top of a 'puncheon' in front of the door, was lying a big moccasin
snake, which had stretched itself out on the log in the moonlight to enjoy itself.
His "snake ship" was made to seek other quarters right speedily. This strange occurrence
was not soon forgotten.
Article continues with information Miss GILBERT's genealogy (parents, etc.).
