Newsletter Subtitle:  YOGS94:  MARION COUNTY, INDIANA EARLY MARRIAGES 1822-1850

Month Day Year: APRIL 18, 2011

CRAZY CRATE 94:  BOOK 1:  INDEX TO MARION COUNTY, INDIANA 1822-1850 MARRIAGE RECORDS FOR SURNAMES BEGINNING WITH A-L INCLUSIVE.  VOLUME I  wasoriginally designed to do all surnames A through Z.  We thought the book was too cumbersome and awkward to handle and photocopy, so we broke it into two volumes: A-L and M-Z.  The original records were located in the County Clerk's Office in Indianapolis, Indiana.  Those records were compiled by the WPA - Indiana Works Progress Administration in 1939.  To their credit, the decision was made to put this index in complete alphabetical order by both the bride's surname and the groom's surname in one list alphabetically. When the spelling was not clear, an alternative spelling version may be listed in (  ).

Therefore each marriage was indexed and alphabetized by the bride's surname, so she will appear in the list with her brother's and unmarried sisters, her uncles, her father, and male and female cousins with the same surname as hers, as well as any non-related people who have the same surname.

The groom will appear in the list with his brothers and unmarried sisters, his father, his uncles, and male and female cousins with the same surname as his, as well as  any non-related people who have the same surname.

The groom's surnames appear at the left margin.  The bride's surnames are indented four spaces.

There is a column for Date of Birth, unfortunately that column is empty throughout this book.  Also empty throughout the book is the column marked Color.  The clerk who now holds these records told me that data was not collected to start with.  Every marriage is listed in the book with the spouse-to-be, the date and most importantly, the book and the page number on which that marriage is recorded making it quite easy for you to ask the county clerk's office to photocopy it for you.

There are no periods or commas anywhere on the page.  The great benefit of this arrangement is that all the people sharing the same surname are grouped together making our research offer possible.  See our special offer at the end of this and the second half's presentation.

The format is controlled by the Column headings, which are:  NAME OF GROOM OR  NAME OF BRIDE (indented); NAME OF SPOUSE; DATE OF BIRTH (information is not included because it was never recorded.); COLOR (information is not included because this was never recorded); DATE OF MARRIAGE; BOOK AND PAGE NUMBER.

We will be happy to search this book A through Z for any one surname for you.  Select a blank envelope, put your name and address on the front for us to use to send the copy/copies back to you.  This is a SASE - Self Addressed Stamped Envelope, sent by you to us.  We will photocopy the one or two pages that contain that one surname and send you the listing of all your one surname in the stamped self-addressed envelope you have folded and stuffed into a second envelope and sent to us at Ye Olde Genealogie Shoppe, P. O. Box 39128, Indianapolis, IN 46239.  There is no charge for this service.  If you have people that might have been in Marion County, Indiana, and marrying between 1822 and 1850, this is your chance to find out more about them for the cost of two stamps!

I talked to the clerk in the Old Records division today and she said the form had the spaces for date of birth and color, but these were not filled in to begin with which is why they are blank in the book.  They do answer mail, but do so on a basis of taking care of today's record keeping first and therefore, genealogical inquiries are answered on an as-time-becomes-available-basis.  The fact that after ordering from us you will have the book and page number available will help immensely, but we, as genealogists, would not be given a first priority basis.  Fees are reasonable at $1 per page basis.

No surname with only one first name is listed here, although there are hundreds in this book.  I found nine surnames of interest to my own genealogy in this book.

We will be happy to search this total book A through Z for any one surname for you.  Select a blank envelope, put your name and address on the front for us to use to send the copy/copies back to you.  This is a SASE - Self Addressed Stamped Envelope, sent by you to us.  We will photocopy the one or two pages that contain that one surname and send you the listing of all your one surname in the stamped self-addressed envelope you have folded and stuffed into a second envelope and sent to us at YOGS, P. O. Box 39128, Indianapolis, IN 46239.  There is no charge for this service.  Send only one surname per week for this free service.

Encouraging our customers to write directly to the court house would flood those busy clerks with too much mail.  Writing us first will obtain for you a complete, as seen above, listing of that surname, letting you check to see if there are any familiar first names that would indicate these people may be related to you.  Then you can write to the Marion County Clerk's Office to receive the actual posting listed in the book to which this serves as an index. They will charge for their services.

Thanks for reading this e-mail newsletter, and thanks for your e-mails of encouragement.  Helping genealogists is what we do here, and we thank you for your comments.  Pat from YOGS.

Thanks for taking the time to check out our crates.

We really appreciate those people who are willing to give our books a second chance to be helpful.  Who knows?  Maybe the one you have been looking for will be on this crate or the next crate.  Blend this research with your census and courthouse research and see how your family puzzle can grow to be more complete!
