This CRAZY CRATE has room for one more book on it than the others have had, so I am going to have to find some other books to fill it out for you!

Here is one, CRAZY CRATE 90C:  BOOK 2:  AN ATLAS OF LAWRENCE COUNTY, INDIANA.  From actual surveys under the direction of B. N. Griffing.  Published by D. J. Lake & Company.  1879.  Reprinted by YOGS in 1997.  Multiple copies are available.  The book is oversized and has 72 pages 11" by 14" in size for the maps and for the index which takes up 18 of them.  Heavy cardstock covers, stapled three times.  This was a "Landowner's Atlas", and most of the farms and plots of land have the landowner's name right on them.  The atlas also features a table of distances and population, an outline plan of Lawrence County, a Patron's Directory, a nice map of the State of Indiana, 2 pages, an Outline and Railroad map of the United States on two pages, and a map of the both the Western and Eastern Hemispheres on two pages.  Each township has its own map - Bono, Flinn, Guthrie, Marion, Marshall, Perry, Pleasant Run, Shawswick, and SpiceValley.  Towns and villages featured, most with maps of their own are:  Bedford, Bartlettsville, Bono, Bryantsville, Erie, Fayettesville, Fort Ritner, Georgia, Guthrie, Heltonville, Huron, Lawrenceport, Leesville, Mitchell, Silverville, Springvile, Tunnelton and Woodville.

The table of distances shows the distances between all 18 of these towns and villages, so one can easily determine how much distance one would have to travel in order to leave any one village and go to any other in the county!  Very handy to know if you wished to visit cousins who lived elsewhere in this county.  Why it was 13 miles from Tunnellton to Bedford and from Guthrie to Huron it was 26 miles.

The Population Table for Indiana is interesting, because the Census shows the total population for each county for both 1860 and 1870.  Marion County, where Indianapolis, the capitol of the state is located,  had a population of 39,853 in 1860 and had grown to 71, 939 ten years later; Lawrence County had grown from 13,692 to only 14,628 ten years later. There is also a list of the approximate population for all the 37 states of the U.S. in 1860 and in 1870.  Indiana boasted 1,350,941 in 1860 and 1,673, 943 in 1870, being one of the 15 states that could boast of over a million in population, yet still behind her sister state of Illinois, who claimed 2,538,408 in 1870; both of them were dwarfed by Pennsylvania's 3, 519,601 and New York's 4,374,703!

In the census of 1870, the most populous township was Marion with 3,006; next was Shawswick with 2,560; Bono, Guthrie, Indian Creek, and Spice Valley all topped 1,000 and the town of Mitchell, the county seat had 1, 087.

Prominent men who merited fame enough [they were elected county

officers!] to have their portraits  surround the picture of the courthouse were John M. Stalker, Francis Wilson, E. D. Pearson, J. E. Dean, Francis A. Sears, Lycurgus Dalton, William Erwin, and M. A. Burton.  Mitchell's map lists Business References for 29 different men on its doubled page!

The list of patrons includes name, post office, occupation, nativity (county, state, country), and date of settlement in this county by township.
