CRAZY CRATE 86 - February 4, 2011On to the books:  More Indiana this week - working on  my desktop again with additions or corrections for the website.

The big news is:  Indianapolis is all iced in.  The trees are gorgeous.  The pines have their branches hung way down with the weight of the snow.  After a week of this, they are beginning to look tired and a little bit sad.

The maple trees lost some branches, one of them a serious break, a twenty-five-foot-long branch which fell right across the path to the shop.

The trees that are bare of leaves look as if each twig has been encased in glass.  When the sun shines on them, they sparkle like icicles on a Christmas Tree.  The bush, each branch covered with about an inch of ice, outside my kitchen window, is a work of art.  Just beautiful!  At night even the tiniest twigs sparkle with the outside lights.

Schools and many businesses have been closed since Monday night.  No one has gone to evening meetings this week.  The ice is treacherous to walk on and drivers are obeying orders and staying off the roads, because driving even at ten miles an hour does not mean you will be able to stop your car, even at a stop sign.

We had no electricity for putting out Tuesday's Crazy Crate because of the ice storm, and with the continuing bad weather, I just saved it for today.  I have not been outside since last Saturday when we took the mail to the Post Office.  Now we are expecting a new storm tonight, so, as long as I can take orders by phone this week, I will, but I may not be able to deliver the books until we get a break in the weather!  Thanks for your understanding and patience.  I am now nice and warm and have food, so I am just working on next Tuesday's Crazy Crate and hope I get to send it out on time.  Pat

IN - YOGS 86 BOOK 1;  INDIANA ANCESTORS. By Vicki Hizer Scott, 1983.  1985..  Published by YOGS [That's us!], 69 pages, cardstock covers, velo-bind, plastic strip binding.  Vickie Scott has written the "Indiana Ancestors" newspaper column since 1977.  These queries and articles appeared in the column in the Lifestyle Section of the Indianapolis, Indiana, Sunday Star, published from January 2, 1983, through December 25, 1983. She has provided to the genealogist thousands of helpful leads, full of family information through the queries as people asked for information on family lines by providing lots of information about what they already knew to help identify missing family members.  The information on meetings and seminars plus new information concerning new publications in the field were also included.

True professionals know that to check query columns for those searching a specific surname is a wonderful solution to a stalled research line and a great guide to finding "new" cousins you didn't even know you had!  But reading all those columns is daunting.

Since this searching can be as helpful as census searching, but can be even more interesting, we have reprinted all the queries printed in the columns and indexed them.  Meaning your hard job [finding your pertinent column] is now simply, "a piece of cake"!  All of the queries are numbered Q- plus the number.  All the queries are listed first by number and the index lists all the complete names in the queries in, what else but, alphabetical order; so you look up the surname, get the query number and find it in the query section at the front of this book.  Names and addresses of the query composers who submitted them are listed with each query. Even the queries that tell you nothing much may tell you lots you did not already know.

Sample:  Q-5,740:  Query - Want correspondence

with descendants of anyone with data on the BLACKETER family 1850-1890.  The majority settled in Parke County, but also in Hendricks, Putnam and DecaturCounties.  Jerry L. Peters, 2930 N. Douglas Drive, Minneapolis, Minnesota 55422.

What he didn't know then, we do today.  Our Blacketers were in Pike County , IN, much earlier than 1850, and the others he had, I imagine,  were probably descendants of that first wave.  Sharing with him could have added a lot of family group sheets to our work and the same to his.  Unfortunately, we had not discovered that line when we published this book.  With any luck, I will get an answer to my letter soon.

Some queries, in an effort to make the questions they have clear to the reader, publish lots of names, dates, and places we can use to make sure we have data that would be helpful to them.

One of the greatest joys of being a genealogist is the friendships that are created through finding and searching mutual lines, or sharing of a common ancestor, be he a scalawag, a scholar, a sportsman or a senator.  We hope this book gives you speedy access to something of intense interest to you.

IN - INDIANA ANCESTORS  QUERIES II, INDEX II.  By Rebecca McCay Roth. 1977.   82 pages, cardstock covers, stapled.  The book above this one chronologically actually follows this one.

Betty McCay, the compiler's mother, wrote the original "Indiana Ancestors" column which appeared in the Indianapolis Sunday Star for many years with various compilers.  This book is the only other book that was compiled and covers queries and columns published from July 7, 1974, through June 29, 1975, containing Queries numbered from 1, 013 to 1, 897.

SAMPLE QUERY: Query number Q-1646:  Need more information on Charles B. Terando, 2804 Saturn Drive, [Indianapolis, IN] 46229.

This book has an every-surname index linked to Query Numbers.  Each column is dated and the females, whenever possible are cross-referenced by both maiden name and married name.  The amount of genealogical information given in these columns is surprising.  Surnames with three or more query numbers are:  Abb(i/o)tt 4, Adams 8, Allen 13, Anderson 10, Armstrong 5, Baker 6, Baldwin 7, Ball 3, Barker 4, Barkley 3, Barnes 6, Barnett 3, Bayne 6, Beard/Baird 6, Bebout 4, Beecham 4, Bell 4, Bennett 3, Berry 8, Black 6, Blake 4, Bowen 3, Boyd 4, Boyer 5, Bram(b)lit 3, Brenton 4, Brown 14, Burgan 4, Butler 6, Calvin 5, Campbell 4, Carroll 4, Carter 9, Chadwick 4, Chamberl(a)in 6, Chandler 3, Chestnut 3, Clark/e 16, Clay 4, Clime 3, Cole 3, Collier 4, Collins 4, Cook 9, Cooper 4, Cox 7, Craig 4, Crank 5, Davis 19, Dawson 3, Dean 4, DeMore 9, Diehl 3, Doty 5, Drag(g)oo 5, Edenburn 3, Edwards 10, Ellis 5, Evans 6, Fields 3, Fitch 3, Foster 4, Freeman 3, Gardner 3, George 4, Graham 5, Graves 3, Green 12, Griffis 3, Griffith 3, Grisham 3, Hahn 4, Hale 3, Hall 7, Hamilton 4, Hamm 6, Harris 6, Hart 3, Hartman 6, Hecathorn 3, Heeter 3, Hessong 6, Hiatt 7, Hicks 3, Hill 7, Hobbs 3, Hollowell 3, Hoover 3, Hunt 3, Hunter 7, Hurst 3, Hyde 3, Ingalls 4, Jackson 9, Jarvis 3, Jenkins 6, Johnson 14, Jones 6, Kell(e)y 6, Kern 3, Kinder 3, King 5, Kline 3, Kolb 12, LaMaster 4, Lee 3, Leonard 3, Lewis 11, Little 4, Long 5, Lontz 3, Lucas 5, McClain 4, McDowell 3, McGuire 5, McIntosh 3, McKnight 9, Mahan 3, Marshall 3, Martin 7, Matson 9, Mauro 3, Meadows 3, Meyer 3, Micha(e)l 4, Miller 23, Millikin 10, Mills 4, Mitchell 4, Monroe 50, Moor/e 9, Morgan 5, Morris 4, Murphy 7, Myers 8, Nelson 4, Newby 3, Newhar(d/t) 5, Newhouse 3, Newkirk 4, Norris 3, Owen 6, Owens 6, Packard 3, Pearson 3, Perkins 3, Phillips 7, Poole 6, Porter 6, Powell 4, Price 3, Pyke 3, Quick 5, Ralston 3, Ramsey 6, Redman 3, Rhodes 4, Robbins 7, Roberts 10, Robinson 10, Roth 10, Ruby 3, Ruse 4, Sanders 6, Schantz 3, Schuelzky 4, Scott 10, Seamaster 20, Sears 4, Seldner 3, Sell 3, Sellars 5, Shaw 4, Sheet(s/z) 8, Shepherd 3, Shields 3, Shook 5, Slaughter 3, Smith 35, Smock 5, Snyder 3, Spencer 5, Spry 3, Stangle 3, Steele 3, Stevens 8, Stewart 5, Stroup 4, Stuart 3, Stump 5, Sutton 6, Svobode 3, Swartz 5, Taylor 21, Terando 37, Thomas 5, Thompson 4, Todd 4, Toney 6, Treat 4, Trowbridge 3, Truax 3, Tucker 3, Turner 4, Ulrey 3, Voll(e)s 3, Voyles 3, Wad(dell/dle) 3, Walker 4, Walters 3, Watkins 4, Watts 3, Weaver 6, Weddle 7, Wells 3, West 4, White 6, Whiteley 4, Whiteside 3, Wier 3, Williams 8, Wilson 15, Wray 3, Wright 11, York 5, Young 7 and Zach 3.

IN - CRAZY CRATE 86 BOOK 3:  EARLY DEARBORN COUNTY, INDIANA WILLS ABSTRACTED FROM WILL BOOKS 1 & 2. By Chris McHenry

Includes wills from the area later becoming Ohio County, Indiana, after 1845, and Perpetuated Testimony Books "CC".  By Chris McHenry, Published by Ye Olde Genealogie Shoppe. 1976.  51 pages, cardstock cover, stapled.  [Prior to 1803, this Dearborn County land had been a part of Knox County, Indiana, Hamilton County, Ohio,  and Clark County, Indiana!]

Dearborn County, Indiana, was formed March 8, 1803, and included, at that time, all of what is now Ohio County, Indiana, and parts of Switzerland, Franklin and Wayne Counties, all now also Indiana counties.  Ohio County remained a part of Dearborn until 1845 and the records of early residents of Ohio County will be found in Dearborn County records.

Dearborn County suffered a terrible fire the night of March 5 through 6, 1826.  The fire totally destroyed the court house and all records.  It was thought to have been deliberately set.  Some records were re-recorded by

a special commission set up for that purpose, and these include, especially, deeds, along with a few wills, marriages, and miscellaneous papers.  These are found mainly in the first few books of the Deed Record in the Recorder's Office.  Wills re-recorded in this manner, twenty-three of them, some dating back to 1817, are included in Part II of this book.

Wills have been abstracted, with all names and all property descriptions included in the wil.  The abstracts fill the first 30 pages of the book, the remaining pages are filled with the index.  All surnames plus first names appearing in the will abstracts are listed in this very comprehensive index, but we have omitted, in this list, all  those surnames with only one first name listed.

This every-name index, in the book,  includes all surnames appearing in the entries and all first names which are included in the book.  The surname index just states on what page of this book the entry containing that first and last name appears.  However, the surname may appear two or many more times in that one will or on that one page.

In this abstraction of the index the surname is given.  The number behind the surname indicates the number of first names of persons who are listed with that surname  INDEX: Abraham 2, Akins 7, Allen 5, Anderson 6, Andrew 2, Antrim 8, Arnold 2, Austin 4, Babcock 2, Bail(e)y 2, Bainbridge 2, Baker 5, Baldwin 2, Ball 3, Ballweber 2, Barber 2, Bargain 2, Barkdoll 2, Barker 2, Barricklow 3, Barton 8, Beach 2, Bennett 6, Bevan 3, Bigney 5, Binnegar 2, Blackledge 2, Blasdel 27, Boardman 2, Bolser 2,Bond 2, Bonham 2, Bostick 6, Bowen 4, Boyle/s 10, Bramble 2, Brasher 2, Brewington 14, Briggs 2, Brinkman 4, Brogan 5, Brower 4, Brown 3, Buck 3, Buell 4, Bullock 6, Burk 2, Burnett 4, Burroughs 9, Busald 2, Carbaugh 5, Carlton 6, Carman 5, Cairns 3, Case 2, Chamberlain 5, Chapman 2, Chisman 10, Christoph 2, Clark 5, Clements 8, Close 10, Cloud 4, Colwell 14, Cole 17, Collier 7, Collins 6, Conaway 4, Connelly 3, Cook 9, Cottingham 4, Coughlin 4, Cox 6, Craft 2, Crandon 2, Curtis 4, Darragh 3, Dashiell 3, Davis 12, Dawson 4, Dean 9, Dennis 9, Dickinson 6, Dill/s 3, Dorman 3, Duck 3, Dunkin 11, Dunn 10, Dunning 3, Durham 2, Eaden 5, Early 4, Eastman 2, Elder 5, Elliott 3, Ellis 3, Ellison 2, Emerson 2, English 4, Ewan 5, Ewart 3, Ewbank 19, Farran 3, Faulkner 2, Ferris 2, Fitch 2, Fogle 3, Fox 10, Frazier 8, Freland 14, Froman 5, Fuller 7, Fulton 4, Gage 3, Garrison 10, Gasten 3, Gibson 16, Givan 2, Godley 2, Gould 2, Goulding 2, Graff 6, Gray 3, Griffith 4, Gutaple 6, Haddock 2, Hall 9, Hamilton 8, Hammerly 2, Hammond 2, Hancock 8, Hansell 9, Hargitt 7, Harris 7, Harrison 3, Hartpence 2, Havrin 10, Hayes 8, Hayman 4, Haynes 2, Headley 7, Henrick 2, Herren 2, Higbee 8, Hinds 8, Hines 5, Holman 11, Hopping 9, Horsley 7, Horton 3, Huber 2, Hudson 6, Huffman 9, Hunt 2, Hunter 4, Huston 6, Jackson 4, James 6, Johnson 11, Jones 6, Judd 5, Kelso 8, Ketcham 9, King 8, Kuntz 3, Kyle 3, Lambert 5, Lambertson 5, Lamkin 2, Lane 8, Larrison 2, Lawrence 16, Leonard 2, Levitt 8, Lewis 16, Liddle 2, Little 4, Loder 6, Longworth 3, Low 2, Ludlow 2, Lundbeck 8, Lyons 10, McClary 2, McClure 8, M'Comes 2, McCormick 3, McCullough 2, McCune 4, McGuire 3, McIntyre 11, McKenzie 9, McKittrick 8, McKnight 6, McLaughlin 2, McMullen 3, Mahan 2, Mahoney 2, Manlief 3, Mann 2, Manwaring 9, Marble 4, Marsh 7, Marshall 2, Martin 11, Mason 16, Mathews 2, Mattocks 4, Mericle 2, Milburn 8, Miller 8, Milliken 2, Moore 31, Morford 2, Morford 2, Morgan 9, Morrison 2, Murphy 2, Murr(a)y 2, Musgrove 3, Myers 2, North 11, Nowlin 2, O'Connor 11, Olmstead 2, Palmer 3, Pardun 3, Pate 17, Patton 2, Pettigrew 4, Pewet 2, Phelps 5, Phillips 2, Pike 6, Plummer 5, Pollock 4, Porter 6, Powell 19, Pratt 4, Pruden 2, Pugh 3, Purcel 9, Rabb 4, Ramer 2, Randall 9, Rawling 3, Record 3, Reed 4, Reeder 2, Rees 5, Re(a/e)ves 2, Rice 9, Richmond 11, Ricketts 7, Roberts 8, Robinson 8, Rogers 7, Rollins 3, Ross 2, Row 10, Rusche 2,  Rush 2, Ryker 2, Saltmarsh 2, Saw 2, Sawdon 3, Schacherer 2, Schmid 3, Schnetzer 2, Schue 2, Scoggin 2, Scranton 11, Scroggin 4, Shires 2, Siedz 2, Smith 16, Songer 2, Southard 3, Sparks 3, Spicknall 16, Sponsel 2, Stark 2, St. Clair 3, Stead 2, Stevens 2, Stewart 9, Stone 11, Storms 3, Stragle 6, Swa(i)les 14, Swartzfeiter 4, Tapley 2, Taylor 13, Terrill 2, Thompson 6, Tibbetts 4, Todd 8, Torbet 2, Tousey 2, Travers 2, True 5, Turner 3, Vail 8, Vandoren 5, Van Horn 2, Van Wedding 2, Vanzile 9, Vayhinger 2, Vetter 4, Vinson 2, Vogel 9, Walker 6, Walking 6,  Waltz 2, Wardell 3, Watson 4, Watts 5, Weaver 2, Weller  2, West 4, Wheeler 4, White 4, Whitman 2, Wicks 4, Wilkinson 2, Will 2, Williams 2, Williamson 2, Wilson 8, Wood 10, Wright 8, Wymond 2, Yeager 12, York 6 and Zimmerman 2.  PRICE:  $14
