Hello! Welcome to the CG Crate Crazy Special A long time supplier of mine for both Indiana and Kentucky books had a question for me. Would I be willing to take on the job of selling for him, on consignment, all of the books from the library his wife had collected to use in providing research services for her genealogy customers?
I thought of you, my readers of this newsletter, and how many good books I, alone, had sold to this lady over the thirty years we worked together, and I said yes, of course, I would be happy to do that. I did not at that time realize how many books she actually did have!
To mark the book as a part of this collection, you will find a 1 inch by 3.25 inch blank yellow label inside the front cover of each book or, in some cases on the front cover. That label indicates that this book had been purchased previously by her and had been used as a part of a private research collection. Also, each of the items will be listed in a crate prefaced with the initials CG. Therefore, all the books listed here have been USED unless marked as NEW.

CRAZY CRATE 193
Hi there! Here we are again with a new super crate of books from my supplier who is dismantling the library of his wife, the genealogist, who passed away some years ago. The books are in varying condition, but are intact and totally usable unless I tell you other wise. Most of them look brand new!
NE(New England)-CRAZY CRATE 193: BOOK CG12: VERMONT and NEW HAMPSHIRE, THEIR COUNTIES, THEIR TOWNSHIPS and THEIR TOWNS. This book was compiled by Joan Colbert Gioe of the Researchers. Each book is treated separately. It includes county outline maps of Vermont and of New Hampshire, followed by individually-drawn county maps, divided into townships, with a list of the many towns found within each county. For each state there is also a combined list of current and extinct towns. Those towns are all listed in the back of this book, which lists all town names, current and past, with the name of the county that has their genealogical records. These two copies come from this private library and are NEW. They are excellent finding aids for towns in these two New England states. Both states are listed in each book. NEW. $5

[NOTE: General open hours for walk-in customers.] Walk-in hours are by appointment or by chance.
We will be working in the warehouse a lot this summer because we found out it was too cold or snowed-in to work there in the winter!! Please call us the day before you plan to come to see us to make an appointment. If we do not answer your call, please leave a note on our answering machine so we can make arrangements to be there whenever you plan to come.
We do not always have enough people here to properly cover the three buildings, which are two miles apart, in which we work. If you come and the shop is not open, please walk up to the house, enter the sun porch and knock on the inside door which leads to the computer room. I will usually be working there for that room and the shop are air-conditioned. Thank you for your patience with yet another move.
We are in a transitional period with the addition of another warehouse and a movement of most of our books to that location to facilitate preparations for our seminar trips and to arrange for the movement of our research library to our former shop. We are not as yet, and probably will not be, ready to open the new research library to-the-public until the spring of 2008. It takes a lot of time and muscle power to move 30,000 books around!

These are good books packed with good information and they are flying off the shelves!
We did not have many of these books left, did we? There were 49 pages of these crates originally and only 10 pages are left. After this, there won’t be much left at all. Hopefully none, so I can open some new crates! Buy them while you can. PAT from YOGS.

CRATE CRAZY CG01
Happy Hunting Grounds Ahead!
Welcome to another CG Consolidated Crazy Crate covering all the remaining books from the crazy crates which we have already published once. We are selling these for one of our former suppliers. The books for this series of crates cover the following states most of which are from the eastern part of our country: Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Missouri, Ohio, Tennessee and Virginia. We have a few from California, Massachusetts, Mississippi, New Hampshire and Vermont.
The books for this crate are Missouri Records, mostly marriage records from various counties and varying time periods. They are materials done by the same author or compiler, Elizabeth Prather Ellsberry, a woman who has done well over two hundred books that I know of, and perhaps more. She has worked in the field of producing abstracts of basic genealogy record books, mostly in Missouri, Kentucky and some in other states, for many, many years.
Her books look much alike. They were typed on blue stencils, run through a duplicating machine, stapled together and the binding was sealed with silver tape. They have cream cardstock covers which over time look faded. Lately many of the titles have been photocopied on a modern machine which faithfully copied the duplicated patterns of light and dark type typical of that duplicating machinery. They are readable, but the type does vary in intensity from light to dark. The books are generally done in chronological order, but they are indexed. I will tell you if they are not indexed. These books are all, due to their method of duplication, occasionally, in certain places, difficult to read.
With the aid of a Magnabrite, a magnifier and light concentrating little tool enhancing your ability to see faint printing, you will be good to go! [NOTE: Dome shaped clear polymer is available here-small purse/ pocket size $20, middle desk size $25.]
Early Missouri records were spelled by the clerk who wrote down what he thought he heard. Therefore, be aware that all these surnames may be spelled three or four different ways. Be alert to spelling changes and variations.

CRAZY CRATE 02
Hi! Here we are again with another Crazy Crate of goodies from the library of a former supplier. While used, all books in this crate are in fairly good condition.
We have some more books from Missouri, mostly marriage record books from various counties. It would pay you to watch for every marriage record for your surname, unless you have a very popular surname such as Brown, Jones or Smith, and copy every will record you can find with the date and place for your surnames. As you move up your family tree, some of those branches of yours will fan out to include some of those marriages and wills that you have filed under Branches and Twigs Not Hanging from Our Tree YET! And then you can hang them on their proper branch. Even if you never connect all those branches and twigs, you may be able to help someone else connect them to theirs! All these books are done in chronological order with an index.

This crate will be concerned with some of the popular census indexes. Most of them are the ones from Accelerated Indexing Systems, the brainchild of Ronald Jackson and the first firm of their kind to attempt to do all the United States Censuses. One of the largest computer indexing projects ever attempted and, for the most part, completed.
A few years later we ordered a computerized census index for North Carolina done by Mr. Jackson. Imagine how helpful it was for us to look inside this huge book and find many of the heads of households of the families we were looking for listed with information as to exactly what county and page number to use to find them on the census microfilm. Our research began to grow at a furious pace. Using this book was so much easier than looking through every census page, haunted by the specter of missing or misreading a name and having to do the search over again. Now here they all were, misspellings and all, lined up in alphabetical order. Genealogists rightly considered the census indexes to be the eighth wonder of the world!
When they first were published, they were very expensive costing up to hundreds of dollars each depending on the size of the book and the number of volumes it took to cover a specific state for a specific time period. Here are the index volumes which we received with the library we are helping to liquidate.
IN-CRAZY CRATE CG08: BOOK 1: 1820 FEDERAL CENSUS FOR INDIANA. Compiled by Willard Heiss. Published by the Genealogy Section of the Indiana Historical Society, Indianapolis (NOT A.I.S). This is one of the best census abstractions ever done. 1966. Reprinted in 1975 when all the less than 20 corrections that had been found were corrected for this book. WAS $25, SALE PRICE NOW $20. The microfilm pages number 461. The printed transcription has two pages per page of the book. Township data is not included and marginal notes of the census taker are also not shown or recorded here.
The original record of the 1820 census for Indiana is found today in the National Archives in Washington, D. C. Microfilm is readily available and can be purchased today or it can be read free at many libraries. The entire census collection through 1930, or many of its parts can also be read through the Internet. I do recommend that the census work be done on the Internet for you are looking at the microfilm of the original census and therefore, have the most authentic source.
Microfilm for the Fourth Census of the U.S. for 1820 for Indiana is available on three rolls. Roll number 13 holds the counties of Clark, Dearborn, Floyd, Franklin, Gibson, Jackson, Jefferson, Pike, Posey and Randolph Counties. Roll number 14 holds the schedules for Crawford, Delaware, Dubois, Harrison, Jennings, Knox, Lawrence, Martin, Monroe, Orange, Owen, Perry, Scott, Switzerland, Vanderburgh, Vigo, Wabash and Washington Counties. Roll number 15 contains Fayette, Ripley, Spencer, Sullivan, Warrick and Wayne. Other counties had not yet been formed at the time of the taking of this census. The schedule for Daviess County is not known to exist although it was a county at that time. This book has been checked and is as reliable a copy as can be expected given the literacy, handwriting and spellings of the period.
The best news of all is that this census copy includes all the numbers of the age groups in the household separated by sex just as they were on the original.
In this book the sample excerpt is: Vantrease, William. Only the name of the head of household appears on the schedule. Following his name is #135 the page on which his entry appears.
Then comes Oran[ge], the county of his residence. Then comes: [000011 00501 0300]. This array of numbers has the following interpretation.
[000011] This array of numbers means this:
0-number of white males under 10.
0-number of white males 10-15.
0-number of white males 16-18. [This number was also included in the next entry.]
0-number of white males 16-25.
1-number of white males 26-44.
1-number of white males 45 & over.
The next array [00501] of numbers means this:
0-number of white females under 10.
0-number of white females 10-15
5-number of white females 18-25
0-number of white females 25-44
1-number of white females 45 & over
The third array [0300] of numbers means this:
0-Foreigners.
3-number of people involved in Agriculture.
0-number of people involved in Commerce.
0-number of people involved in Manufacture.
There are additional columns, such as:
The following columns were left blank.
Free or Slave
Negro Males under 14
Negro males 14-25
Negro males 26-44
Negro males 45 & over
Negro Females under 14
Negro females 14-25
Negro females 26-44
Negro females 45 & over
Other not Indian
The absence of names for the six females and the additional man age 26-44 makes this census not as valuable as it could have been if the actual first names had been there. However, that question was not included until 1850. The other stipulation is even more daunting. There is no valid reason to believe that these people are all part of the same family or, indeed, even related. Anyone living in the household was counted. So we can not say with any certainty that the five girls were daughters of the older man and woman, nor was the younger man necessarily their son.
There is little reason to check the actual census in this particular case, because the book was updated when errors or misinterpretations were found. Of course you would check one time for verification purposes, which procedure should always be followed with any acquired or abstracted materials; and, most importantly to check for the township in which this entry appears, if given. However, many times they were not.
Always search for the smallest jurisdiction for your ancestors. It is better to search for a ‘William Hall’ in a select township or a small town in Indiana. It would be daunting to search for one man by that name somewhere in Indiana as you will find there will be too many of them. One of the pitfalls in searching huge databases is the peril of finding a name and assuming that is the individual for which you are searching when indeed that gentleman is not the right age, not in the right place, and indeed, is not related to your fellow at all.
That only leads to mythology not genealogy! And to many miffed and confused descendants wondering why they can not follow the scenario for your family you have built. You are building, not a pedigree, but a nightmare, for your descendants!
Genealogy means many small steps taken in the effort to build a pedigree. Each pedigree is like a jigsaw puzzle, building a picture of your ancestry one piece at a time! Each step must be tested in many ways to be sure it is not a MIS-step. The larger the database, the more options you have, but also the more risk of making a mistake. I download all materials from the databases on yellow paper to remind me of caution in using it at all and to continue the search for proof closer to the original document than the mention of it on a Website.
Further records on the Van Treese family will be found on this family in the Orange County, IN, Courthouse at Paoli, which has the distinction of being the only courthouse in this nation in which I have been locked, fortunately only during the lunch period. Ray was with me, so I was not upset by this and the courthouse staff was most apologetic. All-in-all, it just makes a great story! Book WAS $25, NOW $20.
IN-CRAZY CRATE CG08: BOOK 2: INDIANA 1830 CENSUS INDEX. By Ronald Vern Jackson and Gary Ronald Teeples. Accelerated Indexing Systems, Inc., (A.I.S.), 137 pages, WAS $45, NOW SALE PRICED AT $40. Standard format consists of surname of the head of household, followed by the first name; county shown with a four-letter abbreviation; page number of the actual entry; and either no twp l (no township listed) or the town/township name, if given. There are three columns, 137 names per column, per page. Sample entries follow:
VAN TREACE, WILLIAM ALLEN 351 WAYNE TW
VAN TRECE, JACOB CLAY 272 NO TWP L
VAN TRIAS, DANIEL DAVI 370 NO TWP L
See what I mean about the spelling! Actual census gives age breakdown for both male and females living in this home. $45. Now sale priced at $40.
CRAZY CRATE CG08: BOOK 3: INDIANA 1840 FEDERAL POPULATION CENSUS OF INDIANA. Compiled by the Genealogy Division of the Indiana State Library. A Bicentennial project of the Genealogy Section of the Indiana Historical Society, 1975. WAS $40. NOW $35 374 pages, 77 entries per column, 4 columns per page.
Sample entries look like this reflecting surname, first name, county and page number only:
Vanteer? John Ripl 172
Vantrece Wm Oran 38
Vantrees Eml Davi 60
John Davi 46
Vantrease Geo Deca 415
Vertrees Williuam A. Pike 442
The 1840 census gives the name of only the head of the household, but the actual census gives the age breakdown of both males and females. It must be remembered that anyone living in that household was counted as a member of that household whether related or not in the 1790, 1800, 1810, 1820, 1830 and 1840. There are five-year age groups for those under 2 and 10-year age groups for those over 20 on the 1840 census. Pensioners are also indicated reflecting service in the previous wars. Microfilm for many of the census manuscripts is available in most large libraries, in the National Archives Regional Branches and on several Internet sites. This index assists in finding your ancestors. These are especially helpful because these are printed indexes which do not change when you attempt to find an entry again or if you are looking for varied spellings. Something, as you can see, very important for my Van Treese line! WAS$40, NOW $35

CRAZY CRATE CG08: BOOK 9: KENTUCKY 1850 CENSUS INDEX. Edited by Ronald Vern Jackson and Gary Ronald Teeples. Accelerated Indexing Systems (A.I.S.). 469 pages, hardbound. Was $95, now $85. There are too many people in this one to list surnames from the index. Binding is beginning to fray slightly along the binding edge, contents good, three columns of data per page. This is the first census that lists everyone in the household by name, age and sex. This index lists head of households and people with a different surname than the head of households, but it is a lot better than searching for one spelling surname and picking your ancestor from the few that show up!
Even I am not sure if [VAN TEEZE, BARNETT, Boone Co, page 141] is a part of the family! [VANTREET, ISAAC of Jefferson County, Louisville, p. 294] may be. The 4 VANTRICE entries—[VANTRICE, DANIEL, Jessamine Co. p.018], [VANTRICE, SARAH, Caldwell Co. p. 214], [VANTRICE, THOMAS W. Caldwell Co. p. 214] and [VANTRICE, WILLIAM from Daviess Co. p 441] may be. The [VANTRIN, JOHN of Fleming Co. p. 350 Mt. Carmel] could be. The [VENTRESS, E. H. from, Union Co. p. 458] needs to be checked out. The [VERTRAS, WILLIAM in Hardin County, p. 353] probably is a member of that crowd. VERTRA, ROBERT H. p. 433 Hardin Co. is a likely candidate. [VERTRAS, WILLIAM, Hardin Co. p. 353]; [VERTREES, JAMES A., Hardin Co. p. 393]; [VERTREES, JOHN p. 435 Hardin Co.]; [VERTREES, THOMAS W. Grayson Co., p. 368]; and [VERTRIES, WILLIAM of Meade Co. p. 185] might, or might not, be related to [VERTRUS, ISAAC, Meade Co. p. 171] who might or might not be related to [VERTRUS, ISAAC of Hardin Co. p. 354] who might or might not be related to [VERTRUS, JAMES of Hardin Co. p. 392] and where. oh where, does [VERTRUS, THOMAS, Hardin Co. p. 395] fit into this picture? Maybe he fits with [VERTRUS, WILLIAM D. in Hardin Co. on page 311]! Maybe one of them, or more, fits with [VIRTRUS, ELIZABETH in Hardin County on page 365]. And is [VONTRISS, MARY, page 514 in Union County] a part of this family? Are they all part of my Van Treese family? Or not? Here is where a part of the 41 verified spellings of Van Treese come from! You can note that not one single family in Kentucky spelled our surname the way my family does now! Well, no one said this hobby/puzzle was going to be easy, did they? And this is just the census from one year of one state!!! WAS $95 NOW $85
CRAZY CRATE CG08: BOOK 12: MASSACHUSETTS 1800 CENSUS INDEX. Edited by Ronald Vern Jackson, Gary Ronald Teeples and David Schaefermeyer. Accelerated Indexing Systems. 1973. Second Printing 1977. WAS $40, NOW $35. This is another of the really useful census indexes done by these early leaders in the application of computer technologies to huge databases of information such as the U. S. Federal Census. This one holds as well as the name of the heads of households, the county jurisdiction and the page number of the census, the detail as to the number of people in the households broken down into age groups. No Van Treese family here. Age details are first males under 10, 10-16, 16-26, 26-45, 45 & over. Then females in the same age parameters, then all others and then all slaves. WAS $40, NOW $35

The columns on the 1820 census reflect a change made by the government in the way information was collected by the age group. Males first column is under 10, second column is for 10-16! Third column is for 16-18 and note Fourth Column is for 16-26 which indicates a duplication. , fifth column is for 26-45 and the sixth column is for 45 & older. The free white female columns have no count made of just 16-18 year olds, but all others are there. The extra column on the 1820 census is for 16-18 year old males only. Checking for men of military age only? The columns for number of slaves and number of free people of color in the household appear only when the column reflects actual numbers. WAS $40, NOW $35

These are especially helpful because these are printed indexes which do not change when you attempt to find an entry again or if you are looking for varied spellings. Something, as you can see, absolutely necessary for my Van Treese line! $65, NOW $60.
I have not done any work in TN records, so these may, or they may not be a part of our family. This has sure been a surprising trip through some really interesting records. If this has not done anything but help make you aware of the many possible variations in spelling you may encounter AND why it is so wise to check more than one census index, I will have done a good job for today!
Here are two more census indexes. I moved them here to keep all the census indexes together, but order them by these crate numbers.

The Dutch influence on America in this early time period has not been given its due. Remember New Amsterdam, Peter Stuyvesant and the Pilgrim’s years in Leyden! There are few Dutch remains on the eastern shore of North America where Virginia lies to give physical evidence of the interest and intentions of the young republic of the United Netherlands during its emergence as a colonial power. Yet there are many similarities in government and religion that bound the Dutch and American peoples. Emanuel van Meteren, a Dutch Merchant living in London, took a deep interest in the English experience in Virginia and recorded some of the earliest events in the history of that colony. Here they are, written from his viewpoint with notes of explanation from historians. WAS $9, NOW $7.

CRAZY CRATE 10
Indiana and Kentucky books appear on this crate.
WELCOME BACK: On this current crate we will see some marriage books (prepared by the firm of our supplier for her research library) that were in very short supply and therefore do not appear in our catalog. The number of these books currently in print, does vary, so I will let you know at the end of each of these reviews how many of each title we have. There are simply too many names in these indexes or in these alphabetically arranged books to list them here. These books are not that expensive and if your research leads to these counties you would be wise to have these books at hand as neighbors and family names abound herein. And if you are wise, you will be careful to gather information on brothers and sisters, aunts and uncles, and cousins as you go. If you don’t, you will never find out who has the family Bible! Or Grandpa’s daily diaries or Grandma’s scrapbook or photo albums!
When people come to our shop, I do not need to know what surname they are searching first. In order to best help them find the materials they need, FIRST I need to know where their ancestors lived at the time period the ancestor was there and where they should be looking and are now researching. Everyone knows this hobby (obsession?) is done in layers called generations. If the research you do takes place in Indiana in 1860, I can only show you the row of nine Indiana bookshelves. But if you can tell me that your research is in Indiana in the 1830s in Wayne County, my first question would be – Do you have any reason to think they might have been Quakers?
Many of the people I talk with just say they do their research on the Internet. I don’t want to know where THEY are when they do it! I want to know where their ancestors lived at the point in their research where and when they have questions!!!

Many computers are not accepting our replies if you have one of the several various Spam Blocker systems causing frustration for us as we try to get your answers to your questions through to you. Thank you.
I didn’t design the systems. I just try to cope with them! Thanks for understanding and helping us out. Technology when it works is a marvelous thing, but when it won’t work and $1,300 in repair costs and new equipment costs still doesn’t have it working, I sometimes wish I had my old manual typewriter back!
You know, one of those Remington Rands or Underwoods that you could fix with a bobby pin [Can you even buy bobby pins anywhere any more?] or a rubber band! I had an IBM electric that I used for over twenty-five years that never had to be professionally repaired. I wonder if that is still in the attic or the basement? Maybe I could type the newsletter on that and then we could scan it in? Oh well, dream on!
Technology will always be with us—and so will the frustration when it won’t work like the advertisements swear it will. Solve all our problems with technology?
I don’t think so! We have a rule here in the computer room that no one brings a ball bat or a hammer into this room!
Well, here is a new crate from our recent supplier. We have a mix of things in this one, so settle back, relax and enjoy the mixture of books on this list. There is not much of it left!
First some Ohio census lists: These are mostly not the lists from the Accelerated Indexing Systems firm. These are lists done by people from Ohio, genealogists for many years, most of them working at indexing the materials from their own or adjacent counties in which they had been working for many years.
OH-CRAZY CRATE CG13: BOOK 1: INDEX TO THE 1860 FEDERAL POPULATION CENSUS OF OHIO, VOLUME I SURNAMES BEGINNING WITH THE LETTERS ‘A’ THRU ‘J’ AND VOLUME II, SURNAMES BEGINNING WITH THE LETTERS ‘K’ THRU Z. Compiled by Lida Flint Harshman And HER FRIENDS. ©1979 by Mrs. Harshman. WAS $120 for the set of two books, now $105. In 1860 there were 2,338,281 persons listed in the Federal Census of Ohio. All heads of household only were listed + any other persons with a different surname. If there were several people with the same surname, but that surname was different than the head of household then the oldest of these was listed in the index. If a parent of the Head of Household, having the same last name, were living there, he or she was listed, too. The listing included in this book totals 650,449 names. Every effort was made to ensure the utmost in coverage and accuracy. A listing of the helpers is full of people with recognizable names in the field of Ohio genealogy. A key to the microfilm numbers of the Ohio 1850 Census Microfilm is included. The numbers of the census rolls run from 928 through 1054. A map of Ohio is included on the endpapers of the book, so finding the township is easy.
Page ix of the Preface has a listing of explanations about county and township listings. No counties had more than one city with ward designations. Only 14 cities had wards-CANTON, CINCINNATI, CIRCLEVILLE, CLEVELAND, COLUMBUS, DAYTON, MARIETTA, MOUNT VERNON, SPRINGFIELD, STEUBENVILLE, TOLEDO, WOOSTER, XENIA AND ZANESVILLE. SAMPLE: Middlebroke, Mary WRHM 56, [TRANSLATION WARREN COUNTY, HAMILTON TOWNSHIP page 56] which did not show up on the census index on the internet, but does here. AND Middlebrook, John, SCGR, 371 [TRANSLATION, SCIOTO COUNTY, GREEN TOWNSHIP, page 371.] that we did find through the internet. [Note: No one would be willing to vote funds to honor the 1850 census takers for their ability to spell surnames.] In a sampling of this size and with the flip of a few pages, this would give you the opportunity to catch most misspellings Both of these books are of excellent quality, hardbound, Volume I has 637 pages, 4 columns wide, 120 entries per column. Volume II has the remaining numbers to the total of 1,353 pages! If you have a lot of Ohio ancestry, this would be a good value for you. Any library with a genealogical interest by their patrons in Ohio materials should have this volume in their collection. WAS $120, for the set, NOW $105.
OH-CRAZY CRATE CG13: BOOK 4: OHIO 1820 FEDERAL POPULATION CENSUS INDEX. By the Ohio Library Foundation, ©1964. Reprinted 1976. 831 pages, hardbound. $60. The best thing about this book is the typing has not been shrunk to the point it takes a magnabrite to read it. It looks like a
